If you want to get the people going around a controversial topic, bring up the second amendment and its focus on gun ownership and rights. No matter where one stands on the issue, the one thing that seems to bind people together is the issue of safety, especially concerning children and youth and their access to firearms. 19-year-old activist Kayla Austin stepped up to the plate to provide a solution for gun control within households.
iPhone users across the world have the convenience of using Siri. From asking for additional information about a random project to helping to identify who sings a song you may have overheard at brunch; the digital assistant is there to provide the answers. With Siri being a core feature on all Apple products, its functionality is paramount to all users. However, did anyone ever conceptualize human attributes to Siri? Is it a Black person? Does the digital assistant identify with a gender?
Technology just helped save Jayline Barbosa Brandão and her family’s lives. According to PEOPLE, nine-year-old Jayline Barbosa Brandão quickly sprang into action after realizing that her parents were in need of immediate help due to exposure to carbon monoxide. “I heard my dad screaming and saw my mom passed out,” she told WFXT during an interview. Brandão was quick with her actions and grabbed her father’s phone to call for help, but soon realized that the iPhone was locked. Without breaking a sweat, she held the phone up to her father’s face, thanks to Apple’s Face ID feature, and was then able to call 9-1-1. “She was so smart,” said her mother, Marcelina Brandão. “If it wasn’t [for] her to call right away, I don’t know what would have happened.” At the time of the incident, the family home was without power for three days after a recent storm in Brockton, MA, which led them to use a generator for electricity. Originally, the generator was outside near a back door, where it ran...
Tech is proving to be savvier for consumers these days, especially as it relates to any encounters with law enforcement. In 2018, Peterson told Business Insider the purpose of the app was to mimic the same functions of body cams stating, “It seemed to me that if you’re getting...
In 2016, when FBI Director James Comey conducted a question-and-answer session on privacy at Kenyon College , one of his revelations baffled the audience. Comey admitted to covering his laptop’s webcam to ensure privacy, and encouraged others to do the same. Some thought it ironic, coming from a federal agent whose work involved the very infiltration of privacy. In the three years since Comey’s initial warning, the information security landscape has changed dramatically. Not only did a presidential election make Americans think twice about online security threats and the ramifications of hacking in politics, but major breaches at well-respected companies such as Target, Equifax, and Facebook also revealed the impact on our wallets and on our identity. While many can imagine what hackers could want with your personal and account information, it may be harder to discern how your webcam video feeds and sound bites could prove valuable. Hackers can actually use a Remote Access Tool to...
