The catalog of one of Hip Hop’s greats, the late Notorious B.I.G., is reportedly up for sale.
Various artists have seen massive profits from their music catalogs, including John Legend and Nelly, who sold 50% of his catalog to HarbourView Equity Partners in 2023 for $50 million, as previously reported by AFROTECH™. That same year, Wiz Khalifa also sold a portion of recorded music and publishing assets to HarbourView, and R&B artist Jeremih followed suit in 2024.
The estates of late artists have also sold catalogs. David Bowie’s estate cemented a deal with Warner Chappell Music in 2022 to acquire his 27 studio albums for $250 million, Variety reports. Sony Music Group also acquired half of Michael Jackson’s publishing and recorded music catalog in a deal valued at a minimum of $600 million in 2023, according to Billboard.
The Hollywood Reporter states that by 2030 the publishing rights asset class will reach more than $10 billion. Now, it appears that the estate of Notorious B.I.G., born Christopher Wallace, could be looking to cash in on this growing market. A deal, encompassing half of his publishing and master rights, is said to be nearing the finish line with Primary Wave. The catalog of Notorious B.I.G., who was killed in 1997, is reportedly up for $100 million while master rights will add on between $30 million and $50 million, sources involved with the matter mention. Still another source claims the final price will more likely be in the eight figures. Either way, the deal would also include publicity rights to name, image, voice, and “other identifiable characteristics.”
Key individuals in the deal include founder Larry Mestel and partner Steve Greener, representing Primary Wave, and Mark Pitts and Wayne Barrow, who represent Notorious B.I.G.’s estate. Voletta Wallace, Notorious B.I.G.’s mother, had been heavily involved with his estate, which released several albums after his passing, including “Life After Death,” “Born Again,” and “Duets: The Final Chapter.” His estate also launched “The Sky’s the Limit: The Notorious B.I.G. NFT Collection” in 2022, which carried his “life, style, and lyrics,” and allowed holders to license the audio of a freestyle from when he was 17 years old, as AFROTECH™ mentioned.
Voletta Wallace recently passed away at 78 years old of natural causes while in hospice care, Variety notes.
