The 170 million TikTok users in the U.S., according to NBC News, will have access to the app for at least another 75 days.
Is TikTok Getting Banned Tomorrow?
On Friday, April 4, 2024, President Donald Trump announced plans to sign an executive order giving ByteDance, the China-based owner of TikTok, an additional 75 days to find a non-Chinese buyer.
“My Administration has been working very hard on a Deal to SAVE TIKTOK, and we have made tremendous progress,” Trump wrote in a TruthSocial post. “The Deal requires more work to ensure all necessary approvals are signed, which is why I am signing an Executive Order to keep TikTok up and running for an additional 75 days.”
On April 24, 2024, former President Joe Biden signed a law requiring ByteDance to sell the app to a U.S. company within one year or risk a ban, AFROTECH™ previously reported.
Lawmakers and national security experts have expressed concerns over China’s potential access to ByteDance’s U.S. user data and its ability to influence public opinion.
Trump’s Extension Of TikTok In The US
On Monday, Jan. 20, 2025 — his first day in office — Trump signed an order giving ByteDance until Saturday, April 5, 2025, to comply with the divest-or-ban law.
After signing the order, Trump said he believes the U.S. is entitled to 50% of TikTok, AFROTECH™ shared at the time. He warned China that blocking any potential deal would be considered an act of “hostility” and lead him to impose 25% to 100% tariffs, Forbes reported.
“We hope to continue working in Good Faith with China, who I understand are not very happy about our Reciprocal Tariffs (Necessary for Fair and Balanced Trade between China and the U.S.A.!),” Trump added in his TruthSocial post on Friday. “This proves that Tariffs are the most powerful Economic tool, and very important to our National Security! We do not want TikTok to “go dark.” We look forward to working with TikTok and China to close the Deal.”
Early Friday morning, China shared plans to impose a 34% tariff on all products imported from the U.S. — a retaliatory move that followed Trump’s announcement of a 10% tariff on all imported goods and higher duties targeting specific countries, AFROTECH™ reported.
Will TikTok Ever Go Away In The US?
Potential bidders who have shown interest in acquiring TikTok include Amazon, owned by Jeff Bezos, and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, who joined a bid led by billionaire Frank McCourt.
Employer.com founder Jesse Tinsley has also expressed interest in partnership with Jimmy Donaldson, better known as MrBeast, who has at least 344 million subscribers on YouTube, we shared previously.
In January 2025, BBC reported that Microsoft was interested in buying the platform as well.
Despite interested bidders, ByteDance previously stated that it did not intend to sell TikTok. Additionally, almost a month before the fast-approaching ban on April 5, 2025, Axios shared that the company was “publicly silent” about its plans and future in the U.S.
