Students can now lean into Google’s AI assistant for college application readiness.

According to a blog post from Google, it has launched Gemini to streamline tasks for users such as researching new topics, providing advice, planning events, and generating ideas.

It can be connected to apps such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Maps, and YouTube and is available in English and Spanish, with the company planning to expand to additional languages.

The feature is also a helpful tool for those who are looking for guidance as they prepare for the college admission process, and particularly first-generation college students. According to Reality Changers, these students often do not receive college readiness or familial guidance and have less financial stability. This could later result in lower self-esteem and make the transition to college more difficult.

“The college application process can be daunting: There is an overwhelming amount of information, and it’s hard for students to know where to start and what advice to follow,” Jules Walter, Google’s product leader of Gemini International, said in an email interview with AFROTECH™. “This is particularly true for first-gen students who may not have knowledgeable people to help them ask the right questions or focus on the right type of information.”

He continued, “This is where Gemini comes into play. Gemini is also a safe space for students to ask questions in whatever way is most natural to them, without worrying about feeling embarrassed. Gemini can help students identify colleges that fit their goals and needs. It can help students discover support programs and scholarships to attend schools that would otherwise be out of reach. It can help students compare options. It can provide tailored advice, including step-by-step instructions, and create personalized plans based on upcoming college application deadlines.”

Students also can toggle around with various prompts that center the college search, essay refinement, and financial aid.

Several sample prompts shared with AFROTECH™ include:

  • “I’m completely overwhelmed by FAFSA. Can you break down the process for me and help me understand what information I need to provide?”
  • “I don’t know where to begin with my personal statement for my college application. Could you provide a framework or key points I should cover to create a strong and compelling essay?”

  • I’m passionate about environmental sustainability, but I’m not sure what majors or careers align with that. Can you help me explore my options?”

Looking at Google’s long-term vision for improving access to equitable education, Walter points to the promising possibilities.

“Gemini can help foster a love of learning — at students’ own pace — and provide access to personalized resources that help in their development,” Walter shared. “Through these efforts, we can revolutionize education and empower all learners to reach their full potential.”
