A class action lawsuit continues to loom over Shaquille O’Neal. As AFROTECH™ previously reported, he was named in a class-action lawsuit filed against the Astrals Project, which he created alongside Music Manager Brian Bayati, who serves as the CEO, and his son Myles O’Neal, who is the head of investor relations. They launched to the public the “Shaq Signature Pass,” a non-fungible token (NFT) series that was labeled as the “first consumable NFT of its kind, and the signing technology is one that we think will have wide-ranging applications.” Coindesk mentions Astrals consisted of 10,000 NFT 3D avatars and a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) for “incubating innovative projects” with the Galaxy token serving as the governance token. In a class action filed in Florida federal court in 2023, it stated the project was in violation of securities law as the company sold unregistered Astrals tokens, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed…and it was very clear that I wasn’t. But, because of that experience, I did a deeper dive into the history of Country music and studied our rich musical archive. It feels good to see how music can unite so many people around the world, while also amplifying the voices of some of the people who have dedicated so much of their lives educating on our musical...
Wu-Tang Clan’s “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin” could have an earlier release date thanks to non-fungible token (NFT) collective PleasrDAO. In 2015, the legendary Hip-Hop group auctioned off only one physical copy of their seventh studio album, and former “pharma bro” Martin Shkreli reportedly bought it for $2 million, according to The New York Times. PleasrDAO then acquired the album for $4 million in 2021 from the U.S. government after Shkreli was convicted of securities fraud. Previously, Wu-Tang Clan’s sales contract with Shkreli stated that “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin” was prohibited from being publicly released until Oct. 8, 2103, which was 88 years into the future. However, the album isn’t as inaccessible now. The New York Times reports that on June 13, PleasrDAO started giving listeners access to a five-minute sampler of an encrypted digital version, an NFT, for $1 in addition to fees. The collective stated it was part of an experiment and posed the question: “Do people still...

The last time Bobby Bonilla played for the New York Mets, 9-11 hadn’t happened yet, and CitiField was known as Shea Stadium. But that hasn’t stopped the Queens-based baseball team from writing the former third baseman and right fielder a check for more than $1 million a year. To be fair, Bonilla was one of the best baseball players on the field in his prime. According to the Society for American Baseball Research, Bonilla was an All-Star six times, won the Silver Slugger Award three times, and was even named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) before he finally retired from the diamond in 2001, when he was playing for the St. Louis Cardinals (Bonilla retired from the New York Mets back in 1999). In addition, Bobby Bonilla helped the Florida Marlins win the World Series back in 1997, and had some of the highest percentages in baseball history. Let’s take a look at how, and why, Bobby Bonilla gets a check from the Mets every year. Editorial note: The net worth listed in this piece is a...

Even when Jay-Z “loses,” he still wins! The news of his failed partnership “Gold Jay-Z” — launched in 2013 with Parlux, a fragrance company — was made publicly known three months ago when a Manhattan jury cleared him of $67 million in damages regarding the deal. Jay-Z’s name has now been cleared even more as the company recently had to cut the check. On Feb. 24, the Hip-Hop superstar won $4.5 million in unpaid royalties from Parlux, according to Billboard. Although the overall endorsement deal went downhill, a New York state appeals court brought truth to the light that sales were still made. “The record is clear: Parlux sold licensed products after July 31, 2015, but failed to pay royalties on those sales,” wrote Justice John Higgitt of the New York Appellate Division, according to Billboard. On top of the royalties, the court went on to rule that it would also include interest for the product sales. The outlet reports that Jay-Z’s win follows after over six years of litigation and...

Wu-Tang Clan’s own Raekwon has scored another win. In a press release announcement, it was revealed that the legendary rapper’s Lambrusco — which he calls “Licataa” — is now being distributed through Legacy Wines & Spirits, a Black-owned distribution company based in Kentucky. The union between Raekwon and Legacy was, in fact, a natural one. Licataa was inspired by the “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx” rapper’s love of Italian culture and heritage. To bring the Lambrusco into the United States, the Chef (born Corey Woods) teamed up with Cantine Ceci, a family-owned winery with 80 years of history to produce a rich, bold, sparkling red wine. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Licataa (@licataawine) Situated in the rolling hills outside Parma, Italy, Cantine Ceci farms in the traditional way, with vineyards planted to catch the sun, carefully monitored throughout the growing season before each grape is harvested by hand at the perfect moment of ripeness. Who are the top-paid NBA players in the 2021-2022 season? The answer just might shock you. Despite the belief that LeBron James would have been the top-paid player in the NBA — and certainly, he works hard enough — the reality is, it’s Steph Curry who holds the title. While his salary doesn’t take into account his other investments — including sponsorships and endorsements — it’s still impressive nonetheless. ESPN dropped the full list of the NBA players with the most impressive salaries late last month, and no less of an authority than NBCSports pointed out that the top-paid players had already locked in their contracts for years to come. “Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry has been the NBA’s highest-paid player for the past four seasons,” the outlet reports. “And he won’t be relinquishing that title in 2021-22. The three-time NBA champion will make a league-high $45,780,966 in base salary this season (via Spotrac). The contract that’s kept him as the NBA’s highest earner is...
