Shaquille O’Neal Reportedly Reaches $11M Settlement In NFT Class Action Lawsuit

An end may be near for a lawsuit involving Shaquille O’Neal. As AFROTECH™ previously reported, O’Neal was named in a class action lawsuit filed against the Astrals Project in a Florida federal court in 2023. He was one of the founders of the project, along with music manager Brian Bayati and O’Neal’s son Myles O’Neal. “Plaintiffs in the billion $ FTX class action case just served @SHAQ outside his house,” the Moskowitz Law Firm shared on X at the time. “His home video cameras recorded our service, and we made it very clear that he is not to destroy or erase any of these security tapes because they must be preserved for our lawsuit.” The Astrals Project initially launched the “Shaq Signature Pass,” marketed as the “first consumable NFT of its kind,” per The Hollywood Reporter. It claimed the signing technology had “wide-ranging applications.” In total, Astrals included 10,000 NFT (non-fungible token) 3D avatars and a DAO (decentralized autonomous organization) intended for...

After Ties Were Severed, Ye And Adidas Have Reached A Settlement

After a period of separation, Kanye West and adidas have reached an agreement settling all legal disputes. As previously reported by AFROTECH™ , Ye’s partnership with the retailer began back in 2013. According to The New York Times, he secured one of the most lucrative deals ever for a non-athlete. By 2016, the rapper signed a new contract that significantly boosted earnings for the Yeezy brand. That same year, West shared that his shoes were selling out within minutes, moving 40,000 pairs at a time, Forbes notes . The partnership ultimately generated $2 billion in annual revenue for adidas by 2022, according to The Washington Post. Bloomberg reported that Yeezy made up half of adidas’ total profits before they went their separate ways, highlighting the partnership’s success. This achievement helped West reach unicorn status, though he lost it after ties were severed following his antisemitic comments in 2022. “ Adidas does not tolerate antisemitism or any form of hate speech. Ye’s...

After Claiming A Victory Following A Settlement In Court, Fearless Fund Has Made A 7-Figure Investment In A Black-Founded Commerce Platform

Fearless Fund has made a new investment, following a court victory. Fearless Fund is more than one month removed from the settlement of a major court battle that centered its Strivers Grant program, which allocated $20,000 in funding to Black-woman-owned businesses. As AFROTECH™ previously reported, a lawsuit had been filed by the American Alliance for Equal Rights group as it claimed the program operated with “explicit racial exclusion.” The case has been settled between the parties, resulting in the grant program’s closure. However, the move was viewed as a victory by Fearless Fund, which only had one grant left to disperse from the program, and the final decision allowed the firm to “strategically” avoid a Supreme Court ruling — something that could have impacted the greater population of Black business owners seeking funding. “This is a WIN and positive outcome for the Fearless Fund and our community,” Fearless Fund stated on AFROTECH™’s Instagram at the time. “We strategically...

Texas Reaches $1.4B In Privacy Settlement After Accusing Meta Of Using Face Recognition Data Without Users' Permission

Texas has reached a $1.4 billion settlement with Meta. AP News reports that the state of Texas filed a lawsuit in 2022, accusing the technology company of gathering users’ biometric data, such as face recognition or fingerprints, without their permission, which is also against Texas state law. Texas filed a separate complaint with Google that same year, but the lawsuit is still pending. “We are pleased to resolve this matter and look forward to exploring future opportunities to deepen our business investments in Texas, including potentially developing data centers,” Meta said in a statement, according to AP News. The $1.4 billion settlement marks the largest for a single state, the outlet notes. “This is by far the biggest state governmental privacy settlement in history,” Chicago-based Class Action Attorney Jay Edelson explained in an email, per AP News. This is not Meta’s first settlement. Recently, Meta reached a $68.5 million settlement with the state of Illinois for violating...

Donna Summer’s Estate Reaches 'Global Settlement' With Kanye West For Possibly Using An AI-Generated Version Of 'I Feel Love' In His Song

A resolution has been reached for a song that was removed from Kanye West’s “Vultures 1” album. Per Rolling Stone, “Good (Don’t Die)” had been pulled from streaming platforms Spotify and Apple as it allegedly infringed on the rights of Donna Summer. Her estate claimed the song was created through a “blatant theft” of her single “I Feel Love” and had filed a copyright infringement lawsuit in February 2024. “In the face of this rejection, defendants arrogantly and unilaterally decided they would simply steal ‘I Feel Love’ and use it without permission,” the lawsuit said, according to Rolling Stone. The outlet also stated: “The filing accused the songwriters of re-recording ‘almost verbatim’ the most ‘memorable portions’ of Summer’s song, using the material as the hook for their own song, and releasing their infringing track ‘knowing they had tried and failed to secure legal permission.’” Furthermore, the official Donna Summer account had shared in its Instagram Story on Feb. 10 that...

Following Josephine Wright's Passing, Her Family Wins A Settlement To Maintain Ownership Of Her Land

Posthumously, Josephine Wright has successfully secured ownership of her land. As AFROTECH™ previously told you, Wright encountered a legal challenge concerning a 1.8-acre plot of land situated on Hilton Head Island, SC, which had been in her family’s possession for over 30 years. Wright presumed ownership in 2012 following the passing of her husband. Per a 2023 lawsuit, Wright was being sued by the Bailey Point Investment Group for encroachment on its land next door where it was planning to build 147 homes. The group had offered $30,000 to Wright to buy her land to include in the project. However, Wright showed no interest in selling her property and maintained this stance despite alleged tactics employed by the investment group including “intimidation, harassment, [and] trespass,” Wright’s lawyers said. “My porch is not on their property,” Wright told CNN at the time. Wright’s story attracted the attention of Snoop Dogg and Kyrie Irving, who collectively donated $50,000 toward...

Lawyers Representing Former Black Tesla Employee Reject $15M Settlement

The updates in this Tesla case just keep getting worse and worse. Lawyers representing the former elevator operator who filed a lawsuit against the smart car company have officially rejected a $15 million award. According to Complex, Owen Diaz is now rejecting a new trial after his original verdict amount of nearly $137 million was reduced to $15 million. As previously reported by AfroTech, Diaz only had a few days to decide on whether he would accept the offer on the table. Now, it looks like he will continue to fight for what he says he’s worth. “In rejecting the court’s excessive reduction by asking for a new trial, Mr. Diaz is again asking a jury of his peers to evaluate what Tesla did to him and to provide just compensation for the torrent of racist slurs that was directed at him,” said his lawyers in a statement.
