“The Marathon Continues” is more than just a slogan for late rapper Nipsey Hussle, whose life was tragically cut short in March 2019. Since his passing, the rapper/entrepreneur has posthumously been at the forefront of multiple business and brand deals in the fashion , film , and tech space. Now, with the help of friends, colleagues, and his elder brother, Samiel “Blacc Sam” Asghedom, another vision of Nipsey’s is coming to fruition. On June 18, The Marathon (Collective), a premier THC and CBD retail store, is set to officially open its doors at 7011 Canoga Ave. in Los Angeles, CA. Legally breaking into the cannabis business has long been a dream of Nipsey Hussle’s and his loved ones have made it their mission to see it through. We’re so honored to be able to...
It’s no secret that Nipsey Hussle was a huge fan of Master P and the movement that he started with No Limit Records, but the respect that he had for the icon ran even deeper than that. Prior to his untimely passing, Nipsey Hussle spoke on the relationship that he had with the New Orleans native during an interview with Billboard. “Master P was an innovator in so many different ways,” the late Nipsey Hussle once told the outlet. “Puff gets his credit. Dame and Jay get their credit. Ruff Ryders, Irv Gotti and Chris Gotti, they get their credit. P don’t get his credit, man.” When asked, “Why do you think that is?” Nipsey Hussle responded: “This is my opinion and I could be dead wrong: He got so successful in music. He was the first to do it the way he did it. He put his kids on — he put Romeo on. He turned into a businessman. He did films. He burned the game out. He maxed out.” It seems as though Master P’s sentiments about the West Coast rapper are one and the same, because, during...
When passion exuded by investors matches that of the founders, it could be a win-win situation. On the latest episode of AfroTech’s Black Tech Green Money (BTGM), Blavity COO Aaron Samuels is joined by Slauson & Co. founders Austin Clements and Ajay Relan to discuss all things venture capital, which includes sharing their expertise on the world of investing. As an early-stage venture capital firm, Slauson & Co. invests in the tools and platforms of people to grow and expand small businesses. Their belief is rooted in the power of entrepreneurship with a focus on empowering founders regardless of their proximity to the traditional venture capital ecosystem. They truly believe that intentionality and inclusivity will take investors a long way when it comes to finding the best pool of founders to partner with. “There are a lot of diversity funds popping up, or a lot of people that are going after those markets and the question that comes with that is — ‘Is it too crowded or too niche...
Nipsey Hussle’s dream behind his Marathon clothing store — launched in 2017 — was unfortunately deferred after his untimely passing. But with the support of his family, the marathon continues! The late rapper’s legacy will keep living on with the upcoming opening of “The Marathon Clothing store No 2” in Los Angeles later this year. The Guardian reports that Hussle’s older brother, Samiel Asghedom, and his family purchased commercial property in the Melrose arts district in LA for the clothing brand. “This second location is a dream that Nipsey always had, and it’s important that his kids are able to see his plans fulfilled,” said Asghedom. The news comes in after a report of the LAPD using predictive policing technology to target Hussle and his businesses. AfroTech previously shared the force’s history of their alleged harassment and scrutinizing his every move — especially after the opening of the flagship store for his brand.
It’s no secret that Nipsey Hussle and the legacy he left behind holds a special place in modern-day history. The late rapper is deemed as a groundbreaker especially in his hometown of Los Angeles. However, despite his more than valuable contributions to the city, it’s now been revealed that he had more haters plotting on his downfall than what was initially foreseen. The Guardian reports that Hussle and his businesses were profiled by an LAPD program called Operation Laser (Los Angeles Strategic Extraction and Restoration).

He had his hand in everything from clothing to affordable housing, and his efforts will be remembered for generations to come. “He was so much of a blessing as a father, entrepreneur, an incredible artist and young mogul,” DJ Khaled said in a follow-up Associated Press report. “We learned a lot from him, and we’re still learning. His music spoke volumes. It touched people in different ways. I was blessed to work with him.” Today, we take a look at the life of Nipsey Hussle, his enduring...

A year ago today (Mar. 31), Crenshaw-bred rapper Nipsey Hussle, born Ermias Asghedom, was gunned down in the parking lot of his Marathon Clothing retail store. In 2013, the All Money In record label founder launched the Proud 2 Pay campaign to promote his $100 mixtape, “Crenshaw.” In 2017, he collaborated with tech innovator Iddris Sandu to establish The Marathon Clothing flagship as an app-driven “smart store” to offer his fans exclusive content and products. By February 2018, Hussle co-founded Vector90 , a co-working space and STEM education incubator to promote intellectual discovery and diversity in tech. In addition, Nipsey Hussle...
Before the untimely death of rap legend and entrepreneur, Nipsey Hussle, he and longtime business partner, David Gross set out to launch their economic empowerment initiative, Our Opportunity . In efforts to keep Hussle’s legacy and vision alive, Gross is continuing to carry out the duo’s vision. In 2019, The LA Times reported Hussle’s vision for Our Opportunity was centered around fighting gentrification by using federal tax codes called opportunity zones to rebuild Black communities in his hometown of South L.A. and across the nation.
