Ghalee Wadood Jr., a 9-year-old who plays for Snoop Dogg’s Youth Football League, inked a six-figure name, image, and likeness (NIL) deal with sports agency Family 4 Life — making him the youngest from the youth league to sign a contract — according to Los Angeles, CA-based KTLA-5, an affiliate of The CW Network. In addition to signing Wadood Jr., Family 4 Life represents NFL players from the New England Patriots, the San Francisco 49ers, and the New York Giants.
With many dollars up for grabs in the name, image, and likeness arena, one college athlete will be using his earnings for a better cause. At just 20-years-old, Deja Kelly has been stellar to watch both on and off the basketball court. Nearly two decades later, Chris Webber is still making the right shots. The former NBA player is diving headfirst into the Non-Fungible Token (NFT) space, taking a seat at the table as president of Coinllectibles. Webber’s introduction to the technology company began after a conversation centering around The Chris Webber Collection of African-American Artifacts and Documents, which includes a postcard Malcolm X sent to Alex Haley when he was in Mecca and the first poetry book written by an African author. Now Webber will continue developing more groundbreaking collections — this time by disrupting the NFT space. “The business has allowed me to stay competitive, empower people, and learn. What attracted me to Coinllectibles was the opportunity to work with arguably one of the best when it comes to NFTs, especially cryptocurrency, but also the fact that I can merge sports,” Webber told AfroTech exclusively. According to a press release, Webber’s role will bridge the crossroads of...
Student-athletes will have yet another opportunity to lock into the name, image, and likeness deals (NILs), thanks to adidas. According to CNBC, the company will support student-athletes at NCAA Division 1 adidas-sponsored schools. Over 50,000 athletes will have a chance to join the program and become paid affiliates for the sports brand. “The adidas NIL network embodies our belief that sport has the power to change lives by upskilling athletes and giving them the ability to begin to experience an entrepreneurial path that will carry them beyond their college years,” said Jim Murphy, adidas NCAA program lead, in a statement.
