Howard University Is The First HBCU To Earn Coveted Research One Carnegie Classification As It Awards Record Doctorates To Black Students

Howard University has received a new distinction. According to Diverse Education, the Historically Black College and University (HBCU) has earned the Research One (R1) Carnegie Classification — a first for an HBCU. Not to mention, such an accomplishment is shared with fewer than 150 universities across the country. The criteria entails that institutions allocate at least $50 million toward research and development and award a minimum of 70 research doctorates, the Carnegie Classification website states. Howard University surpassed these expectations in fiscal year 2023, allocating just under $85 million in research expenses and awarding 96 doctorates in a variety of fields — the highest number awarded to Black students at any college or university in America, according to Dr. Bruce A. Morgan State Launches Task Force To Address 25% Decline Of Black Male Enrollment In Higher Education

Morgan State University is on a mission to determine the reasoning behind a decline in Black male enrollment and retention in higher education. According to The Baltimore Sun, the Historically Black College and University based in Baltimore, MD, has established a task force aimed at helping reverse the ongoing trend, both at Morgan State and potentially at HBCUs nationwide. Morgan State President David K. Wilson said the trend has become a critical concern for the university’s campus and students are worried as well. “Morgan has long been a leader in providing access and opportunity for Black males seeking higher education,” Wilson said . “The ongoing decline in Black male enrollment at HBCUs is a clarion call for action, and we will not stand idly by.” He continued, “This task force will engage in rigorous research to understand the forces at play and develop evidence-based strategies to ensure that more Black men not only enroll at Morgan but thrive and complete their degrees.”...

Black Woman-Owned STEM Nonprofit Receives $4M To Launch Smart Health Hub Initiative In Miami, FL

The Smart Tech Health Hub will be making its way to Miami, FL. According to a news release provided to AFROTECH™, $4 million has been awarded to the S.E.E.K. (Seeking Education Empowers Knowledge) Foundation Inc., a nonprofit launched by Anike Sakariyawo, in order to make that possible. The foundation, which focuses on STEM education, community involvement, and health and wellness for children ages 3 to 18 plans to open the four-story building in Opa-Locka, a suburb of Miami. This will facilitate access for residents, children, and their families to STEAM education, workforce re-entry programs, and broadband service, dismantling existing entry obstacles. Morgan State Teams Up With The NFL To Prep HBCU Students For Careers In Pro Football Administration

Historically Black Morgan State University is partnering with the National Football League (NFL) to launch a data analytics initiative and a career development program, the university shared in a recent press release. The newly created Data Analytics Education and Research Initiative at Morgan State will provide students with opportunities to conduct in-depth research on sports, e-sports, fintech and related business areas by using different data analytics tools. One of the latest HBCU athletes lined up for a name, image, and likeness (NIL) deal is Fayetteville State University’s ( FSU ) defensive back Joshua Williams. According to a press release, Fuddruckers’ newest owner Nicholas Perkins will now aid a portion of the FSU football star’s school expenses in exchange for Williams making appearances at a Church’s Chicken restaurant — owned by Perkins. Morgan State University students continue to breed excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Mikayla Harris — a senior from the School of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences (SCMNS) — was awarded $15,000 from the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF) for 2021, Morgan State University announced. “I wanted to apply to represent Morgan State as well as Black women in STEM,” said Harris. “There is not enough biomedical research that includes Black people, people of color and other minority groups.” Harris is Morgan State University’s second consecutive scholar to win the highly competitive Astronaut Scholarship. Morgan State University Alumnus Calvin Tyler Donates $20M, the Largest Gift Received From an HBCU Alum

It’s nothing like giving back to the place where it all started! For Calvin E. Tyler, that place is Morgan State University. The alumnus just donated $20 million to the HBCU making it the school’s largest private donation from a former student in its 154-year-history, according to a press release. As a Morgan State student during the 1960s, Tyler studied business administration. He ultimately switched his career goals due to financial reasons and became one of the first 10 UPS drivers on the east coast. At UPS, Tyler worked his way up through the ranks and eventually became senior vice president of operations prior to his retirement in 1998. In 2002, Tyler and his wife Tina created the “Calvin and Tina Tyler Endowed Scholarship” at Morgan State University with a vision to provide full-tuition to students. Morgan State University Announces Opening of First-Ever HBCU FinTech Center For Students

Morgan State University’s Earl G. Graves School of Business and Management has officially announced the opening of its new Center for the Study for Blockchain and Financial Technology — better known as the FinTech Center and the first-ever to exist at a HBCU. According to Black Enterprise, the FinTech Center first opened up in 2019. The center is now ready to commence classes this semester, which will all be dedicated to the study of blockchain, cryptocurrency, and the digital finance industry. The university will reportedly partner with Silicon Valley FinTech company Ripple and assist the Graves School of Business with building out a specialized curriculum. Google Launches ‘Tech Exchange’ to Increase Diversity in Industry

Google is on a mission to create a more diverse company that reflects its user base. The tech giant announced Tuesday their plans to continue investing in fresh, diverse tech talent through their new Tech Exchange program.
