This First-Generation College Student Just Graduated From Harvard Law School

Derrick Parker Jr. just graduated from Harvard Law School, and according to his Facebook page, he’s his “ancestors’ wildest dreams.” We can’t help but be inclined to agree. From a young age, Parker always seemed destined for success. Originally from Kansas City, MO, Parker came up in humble circumstances. His father was a barber, and his mother was a factory worker. Despite these circumstances, they saved enough money to send him to Lincoln College Preparatory Academy. While there, Parker was 1st Chair Trombone in both the jazz band and wind ensemble. But that’s not all the Harvard Law School graduate achieved. Black Doctors Matter: Mike Bloomberg Donates $100M to HBCU Medical Schools

HBCU medical schools matter! Only 5 percent of practicing physicians are Black according to a study conducted by the Association of American Medical Colleges . As racial disparities within the medical field continue to increase, it is vital to create more Black doctors that will know how to care for Black patients who are often neglected. Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg has announced that he will make a $100 million donation through Bloomberg Philanthropies, according to a press release . This will be circulated in the form of scholarships for students who are currently enrolled in medical programs at four HBCU medical schools that have been impacted by COVID-19. “COVID-19 has been especially devastating for the Black community, and the scarcity of Black doctors practicing in Black communities is one reason for it,” Bloomberg said in a press statement . Morehouse Alum Starts Foundation to Empower Black ParentPreneurs With $10K Grants

Since the start of the pandemic, Black businesses have faced detrimental circumstances in terms of having the support to navigate this difficult time. In March of this year, Morehouse Alum James Oliver, Jr. took it upon himself to help Black businesses and families. To do so, he decided to start the ParentPreneur Foundation to empower Black people to be the best parents and entrepreneurs, providing funds, tools, resources, and social capital.
