As previously reported by AFROTECH™, Moss became an investor in Brittany Tolliferreo’s Philadelphia, PA-based restaurant chain, Chick-A-Boom, in 2023. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Tolliferreo reached out to Moss via direct message, and then he later liked a sponsored Chick-A-Boom post in 2022, sparking further conversation. “We got on a couple of Zoom calls, and he came here, tasted the product, and loved it. Couple Felicia and Winchel Elibert are helping Black-owned businesses create wealth. According to 95.5 WSB, the pair are behind a four-acre Fayetteville, GA shopping plaza that will be home to several businesses. Winchel already owned multiple barbershops, while Felicia worked as a nurse and is the founder of several Cleansing Waters Wellness Center locations. WSB-TV Atlanta News mention that the Eliberts also owned a Smoothie King for several years. A multi-million-dollar investment towards Black farmers is underway. As AFROTECH™ previously reported, the Black Farmer Fund, created by Karen Washington and Olivia Watkins, raised $11 million in September 2023 to support Black-owned agricultural systems through wealth-building opportunities. Since then, the New York-based nonprofit has reached its target goal in a second fund, which will deploy $20 million in capital to improve the Black food system, a press release states . It will specifically target food businesses in the Northeast region and provide support in the form of “low-interest loans and gifts.” The intention is for the awarded businesses to enable Black growers to strengthen their presence in the market and gain greater authority in the supply chain. Howard alumni are taking over the restaurant scene in Washington, DC. In 2012, Denville Myrie Jr. began selling Jamaican jerk chicken from the comfort of his Howard University dorm room, which filled a gap for quality late night foods, according to information on his company website. Students took great interest in Myrie’s cooking, and he would carry on with the food service beyond the campus walls. He was able to hire his peers as delivery drivers when he relocated into a town house, and his employees would serve Howard University six days a week. Myrie’s vision was also aided by Kadeem Todd, who also attended Howard University and serves as a co-owner in the business, according to Fox 5. Business Insider reports Eribo, a self-taught coder, had studied psychology in college but saw finance as an opportunity for growth. The Williams & Russell project is looking to revive the Albina community, an area in North Portland that was once home to many Black families and Black businesses, until they were pushed out, KPTV-12 reports. The soon-to-be revitalized area was expected to make room for an expansion of Legacy Emanuel Hospital in the 1970s , however plans never materialized, KGW-8 mentions. “They came in and they demolished everything with the idea that this would be developed, and it just sat vacant for five decades,” Bryson Davis, president and board chair of Williams & Russell CDC, said per KGW-8. A Black-owned cannabis dispensary has opened in New Jersey. A news release mentions Simply Pure is set to open its doors on July 27, 2024. The company was founded by Wanda James and her husband, Scott Durrah, pioneers in the space since 2004. Veriheal reported that the two launched Apothecary of Colorado and became the “first Black-owned and veteran-owned dispensary in the United States.” The dispensary, edible company, and growing facility inspired their next venture, Simply Pure in 2010. According to the company website, the cannabis company disrupted the market by specializing in healthy alternative edibles.
