Serena Williams has ownership in a new sports team.

As AFROTECH™ previously reported, the tennis legend is an investor in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) club Angel City FC, alongside her family, which includes her husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian Sr., and their two daughters, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. and Adira River Ohanian.

According to a press release, Williams has officially joined the ownership group of the WNBA’s Toronto Tempo, which is owned by Larry Tanenbaum’s Kilmer Sports Ventures. Williams’ presence is also a full-circle moment, as she launched her career journey in Canada back in 1995.

“I am thrilled to announce my ownership role in the first Canadian WNBA team, the Toronto Tempo,” Williams said in the press release. “This moment is not just about basketball; it is about showcasing the true value and potential of female athletes — I have always said that women’s sports are an incredible investment opportunity. I am excited to partner with Larry and all of Canada in creating this new WNBA franchise and legacy.”

Tempo Basketball Club President Teresa Resch commented:

“Serena is a champion. She’s the greatest athlete of all time, and her impact on this team and this country is going to be incredible. She’s set the bar for women in sport, business and the world — and her commitment to using that success to create opportunities for other women is inspiring — we’re thrilled to be marking the lead-up to International Women’s Day with this announcement.”

Tanenbaum added:

“She’s earned every bit of her incredible success with hard work, tenacity and determination in the face of countless challenges. She exemplifies the very best of what the Tempo stand for — we couldn’t be more honoured to have Serena in our court.”

Williams’ investment in the team comes nearly a year since Toronto was awarded a team by the WNBA. According to another news release, Toronto Tempo becomes the league’s 14th team, and games are expected to roll out in 2026.

Looking ahead, Williams will work closely on the team’s jersey designs and will be involved in merchandise collaborations.
