The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, has become something of a household name thanks to his 2019 season with the team when he led them to their first Super Bowl appearance in 50 years. Even though he has only been at the pro level for a short time, other opportunities like endorsements with Subway and Adidas, as well as other high profile investments in the sports industry, have helped to propel his visibility beyond the sports world. With a career that seems to only be getting brighter with time, a common question many people ask is exactly how much is Patrick Mahomes worth these days?

Patrick Mahomes Early Life

Patrick Mahomes is a native Texan from the town of Tyler where he was born in 1995. He is the son of Pat Mahomes, who is a former MLB pitcher for several teams in the U.S. and who also played a few seasons in the Nippon Professional League in Japan.

From a young age, Patrick always showed an interest in sports, having played basketball, baseball and football in high school. Even as a teenager, he was rated as a three-star recruit by the sports platform Rivals.com and was even ranked as the 12th best dual-threat quarterback.

College Career

Because of his high rank as an athlete, Mahomes fielded offers from several Texas-based schools including Texas Tech, Houston and Rice University; he eventually committed to Texas Tech University. At one point he was even considered a potential prospect for the MLB 2014 draft. Although he opted to continue with his educational track, Patrick was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 37th round.

As a member of the Texas Tech football team, Mahomes started his freshman year where he quickly racked up impressive stats in a starting game against the University of Texas as a backup replacement to team member Davis Webb. After completing 13 of 21 passes and totalling 109 yards in the game, Patrick would go on to start for the final three games of the season.

The following year, he would serve as the starting quarterback helping the team achieve a 7-6 season. His personal record for his sophomore year included a total of 10 games that exceeded 350 passing yards, and four that went over 400. Additionally, he led the team to three touchdowns in eight of the games and he even led the Big 12 Conference with 364 pass completions from 573 attempts and a total of 4,653 yards, 15 interceptions, and 36 touchdowns for the 2015 season.

His Final Season

Patrick Mahomes’ junior year at Texas Tech would be his final one. It proved to be a good year. In the 2016 season he threw 18 touchdowns in September alone, and averaged 442.5 passing yards per game. His stats only got better as the season progressed, eventually tying the NCAA record for single game passing yards thanks to an impressive 734 yards. When the season ended, Mahomes led the country with 421 yards per game, 5,052 passing yards, 53 touchdowns, he was responsible for the most points (318) and total offense yards at 5,312.

In that year, he earned the Sammy Baugh Trophy for the top passer in the nation. He was also named an Academic All-America second team by the College Sports Information Directors of America. When the season ended, he announced that he would not continue to his senior year and would instead enter the NFL Draft.

Patrick Mahomes Joins The NFL

By the time Patrick Mahomes was poised to enter the NFL Draft, he was ranked as the second best quarterback by SI.com, the third best by ESPN, and the fourth best by NFLDraftScout.com. And even ahead of the draft, there were people from 28 NFL teams that came to see him during his pro day at Texas Tech.

The 2017 NFL Draft

He later went on to have private workouts or team visits with 18 teams — the most for any of the 2017 prospects. Some of his team suitors included the Arizona Cardinals, New Orleans Saints, Cincinnati Bengals, Los Angeles Chargers, Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns and the Pittsburgh Steelers. In the first round, Mahomes was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs. He accepted the offer on July 20, 2017 which included a four-year guarantee and a total contract value of $16.42 million which included a $10.08 million signing bonus.

2017 And The Beginning Of An Era

It would not be until later in the 2017 season that Patrick Mahomes would begin to play for the Kansas City Chiefs. In the team’s week 17 game, Mahomes faced off against the Denver Broncos — playing most of the game and helping the team win 27-24 against the Broncos. In that game he earned 284 passing yards, along with completing 22 of the 35 passes and one interception

The 2018 Season Gets Busier

2018 saw Mahomes enjoying more action on the field after the Chiefs traded the previous starting quarterback, Alex Smith, to the then Washington Redskins (now Commanders). Now that Patrick Mahomes was the starting quarterback, his stats progressed quickly with many wins. This included his first game against the division rival Los Angeles Chargers. Later in the season, a win over the Indianapolis Colts would clinch the Division Round and position the team to square off against the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship.

Even though the Chiefs would lose 37-31 in overtime at that game, the season proved that Mahomes had the skills to perform at the professional level. He was named to the 2019 Pro Bowl and the First Team All-Pro. He also earned the 2019 Best NFL Player ESPY Award and the Kansas City Club 101 Awards AFC Offensive Player of the Year. Other accolades included being named the NFL MVP and being ranked as the fourth-best player by other players in the NFL Top 100 Players of 2019 listings.

2019 Season And Super Bowl Dreams

Patrick Mahomes continued to be the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs throughout the 2019 season. This time, Mahomes led the Chiefs back to the AFC Championship where they faced off against the Titans and won, sending them to Super Bowl LIV. Even though the game initially looked to favor their opponents — the San Francisco 49ers — the Chiefs eventually regained momentum in the 3rd and 4th quarters and clinched the win.

This was the first time the Kansas City Chiefs had appeared in the Super Bowl since Super Bowl IV in 1970. Mahomes was named Super Bowl MVP, the youngest quarterback and third-youngest NFL player to receive that award. He was also again ranked as fourth by fellow players for the NFL Top Players of 2020 list.

Contract Extension And A Continuing Career

On July 6, 2020 Patrick Mahomes agreed to a contract extension. This meant he signed a 10-year extension worth a base of $477 million with the potential for bonuses of up to $26 million — for a total of $503 million. This means he will be playing for the Kansas City Chiefs through 2031. It is currently the largest contract in American sports history and at the time of signing he was the first professional athlete worldwide to have a contract worth more than half a billion dollars.

In the 2020 season, Mahomes again helped the Kansas City Chiefs return to the Super Bowl, this time Super Bowl LV. However, this time they faced off against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and were unsuccessful. Still, Mahomes earned the top-ranked player award by his peers for the NFL Top 100 Players of 2021 list. In the 2021 season Mahomes continued to rack up impressive stats. Although the Chiefs didn’t make it to the Super Bowl this season, Mahomes earned a Pro Bowl nomination and was ranked eighth by other players in the NFL Top 100 Players of 2022 list.

In the 2022 season, the Chiefs again returned to the Super Bowl, this time Super Bowl LVII where they faced the Philadelphia Eagles. Even with an ankle injury in the second quarter, Mahomes helped the team defeat the Eagles with a 38-35 win. He was again awarded the Super Bowl MVP award and led the league in passing yards and passing touchdowns.

Patrick Mahomes’ Current Net Worth

Even though he has a rather huge contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, this figure is still paid out over many years. According to research, it is estimated that Mahomes earns around $4 million a year just from his NFL contract.

But also consider that he has several endorsement deals. According to 1Up Sports Marketing, the agency that has been representing Patrick Mahomes since 2018, the now three-time champion and Super Bowl MVP is officially signed as an endorser for a total of 15 different companies. He also has ownership in a professional pickleball team that is slated to debut in Miami, Florida. Likewise, he and wife Brittany Mahomes are part owners in the NWSL Kansas City Current team.
