LeBron James’ business partner and Klutch Sports Group Founder Maverick Carter is looking to own an international league.
Since 2006, Carter has been working alongside James within the business world. The pair had been playing basketball together in high school, and Carter was a trusted figure in James’ life. For that reason he was tapped by the NBA superstar to assist him on the business side as his sports career was taking off.
Since that time, Carter has been a pivotal player in James’ journey to becoming a billion-dollar athlete today. Carter has served as his manager, and they have launched several business together, including SpringHill Entertainment, which merged with British television, film, and music production company Fulwell 73 in 2024, as AFROTECH™ previously told you. The pair also have stake in Fenway Sports Group, which brought the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins, Liverpool Football Club of the English Premier League, RFK Racing, and the MLB’s Boston Red Sox into their portfolio, among others.
“It’s breaking down the barriers,” James’ sports agent Rich Paul told CNBC about James and Carter taking a minority stake in the Fenway Sports Group, and thus the Boston Red Sox. “You’re talking about a game that was once limited. Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente – guys like that people didn’t even want to play the game. The Negros had to have their own league to us now owning and representing in that business sector. It’s a testament to us continuing to evolve and not being complacent.”
It appears Carter is scaling his interest in ownership to the international level. Bloomberg reports he is eyeing owning an entire basketball league alongside a group of investors. They have already secured the interest of several other investors including UBS Group AG, Evercore Inc., SC Holdings, Skype co-founder Geoff Prentice, and former Facebook executive Grady Burnett, as the investor group looks to raise $5 billion to launch an international basketball league comparable to the NBA.
At the time of this writing, James is not currently listed as one of the interested parties. However, the athlete has reportedly made it clear he is looking to secure interest in an NBA franchise, particularly in Las Vegas, NV.
“My enthusiasm about being here post-career, bringing a team here, has not changed. The fans are amazing here… The NBA will be another great addition to this city,” James said of his interest in a Vegas-based NBA team during a press conference in December 2023, per X.
