New changes are underway at LeBron James’ media company.
Bloomberg previously reported that the SpringHill Co., owned by James and Maverick Carter, had been in talks for several months with Fulwell 73, a British television, music, and film company known for “The Kardashians” and “Carpool Karaoke.” Sources close to the discussions mentioned plans for unscripted and live programming, with both parties aiming to leverage their resources across Europe and the United States.
Now, it has been confirmed that the two companies will merge, however without any money being exchanged. The merger will instead be supported by a $40 million investment toward future growth from entities such as Fenway Sports Group, RedBird Capital Partners, UC Investments, Nike, Epic Games, Main Street Advisors, and Eldridge Industries, according to Variety.
“We didn’t want to stand still and ultimately just be a production company where more and more you are in the services business. We’re producers for hire,” Fulwell 73 Co-Founder Ben Winston told Variety. “It’s very, very difficult and the bar has changed a lot for us in a streaming-dominated world.”
Fulwell’s partners said, according to Deadline, “Together, we’ll continue doing what we do best, and now we’ll do it as a global entertainment studio with more to offer our partners.”
At the time of this writing, a name has not been chosen for the company resulting from the merger. However, Carter will serve as joint CEO for the venture alongside Fulwell 73 Managing Partner Leo Pearlman. Winston, Gabe Turner, Ben Turner, and James Corden, who are part of Fulwell 73’s leadership team, will also maintain their involvement.
Carter said to Variety, “Although the entertainment world is changing and moving, the one thing that will never change, no matter how it gets distributed … the thing that has always remained constant is that if you make great content with amazing talent and great stars, viewers will want it. We believe we now have best-in-class capability to do that, and we have the best relationships with talent.”
