Dwayne Johnson decided to fire his agents because he saw the bigger picture.
Johnson first put his name on the map as a professional wrestler, inspired by his father, Rocky Johnson, who had a legendary resume within the sport and was honored as a WWE Hall of Famer.
“I think I’m going to like professional wrestling,” Johnson remembered, according to a conversation with GQ. “So we fought. [My dad] didn’t want me to get into it. And then I wound up having the career that I had. And he was proud. But he also wrestled with a lot of my success, and I know that as his son.”
Johnson would later find a commonality between wrestling and acting. He revealed to GQ that he pivoted attention towards Hollywood, understanding that he could still reach the masses as an actor.
“When I got into the business of Hollywood and moviemaking, it’s like, ‘Okay, well, what kind of movies do I want to make? I want to make movies that hopefully are good, that don’t suck. But also reach as many people as possible,’” he explained.
Thanks to exposure in wrestling, planting his feet did not take long. Johnson’s acting debut occurred on television with “That ’70s Show.” On the big screen, his film debut was in “The Mummy Returns,” and he appeared in the 2002 spinoff “The Scorpion King.”
However, shortly after these roles, Johnson hit a trying time in his career, landing movies that were not performing well at the box office. Inspired by the success of Will Smith and George Clooney, Johnson hoped to achieve a level of success that matched or even surpassed theirs. But his agents were skeptical, which led him to clean house and hire new representation, GQ notes.
“That was the idea back then,” Johnson said to the outlet. “I could be bigger. And I mean that respectfully. But also maybe do things differently, because there’s no blueprint, I feel like, for a guy like me, who looks like me. But I feel now looking back on the career…. Bigger than Will, bigger than George? I think the declaration is just: different.”
As Business Insider notes Johnson would prove those agents wrong. In fact, his films have gone on to surpass both actors. Smith’s movies have earned $4.2 billion in the U.S and Canada, while Clooney’s movies have generated $2.5 billion.
With projects that include “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” “Moana,” and “Furious 7,” Johnson’s films have grossed an estimated $4.6 billion.
According to Celebrity Net Worth, he is currently making at least $100 million a year through his work with film and endorsements. With sales continuing to rise for his Teremana Tequila, the outlet also notes Johnson has a 20% to 30% stake in the brand, which is valued at $2 billion. That brings his net worth to an estimated $800 million today.
