Netflix recently teased a trailer to announce a new documentary profiling the life of Cyntoia Brown-Long. However, the streaming giant missed one key thing — none of Brown’s input.

Shortly after releasing the trailer, Brown came out with a statement on Instagram explaining how she had no involvement in the making of the documentary.

She captioned the post stating:

“While I was still incarcerated, a producer who has old footage of me made a deal with Netflix for an UNAUTHORIZED documentary, set to be released soon. My husband and I were as surprised as everyone else when we first heard the news because we did not participate in any way.

However, I am currently in the process of sharing my story, in the right way, in full detail, and in a way that depicts and respects the woman I am today. While I pray that this film highlights things wrong in our justice system, I had nothing to with this documentary.”

Brown was convicted in 2006 for the killing of the 46-year-old real estate agent, Johnny Allen, who solicited the then-16-year-old sex worker at a Nashville Sonic restaurant in 2004, as reported by Rolling Stone.

Brown fought back in self-defense and during her trial testified that she had also been forced into sex work. However, prosecutors argued that the murder was premeditated as a ploy to rob Allen.

According to TheGrio, the underaged teen was then charged as an adult and sentenced to life in prison without the option of parole for 51 years.

TheGrio also reports Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam commuted Brown’s sentence in 2019, which later led to her release. That same year, Brown put out her memoir titled, “Free Cyntoia: My Search for Redemption in the American Prison System.”

The new documentary,” Murder to Mercy: The Cyntoia Brown Story,” premieres April 29 and features old footage from a previous documentary on Brown’s life released in 2011.

Brown’s lack of involvement will show in the film as it features no new interviews of her. However, the documentary will feature recent interviews of other people who were involved in her case.
