Chipotle Mexican Grill is putting an end to rumors speculating that it has filed for bankruptcy and plans to close restaurants.

On Wednesday, March 26, 2025, as speculation circulated about a potential bankruptcy filing, a Chipotle spokesperson confirmed via email to AFROTECH™ that the “false information” started with an inaccurate online article.

Chipotle Bankruptcy

“The claims that Chipotle is filing for bankruptcy and closing restaurants are false,” the spokesperson said. “The false information stemmed from an inaccurate online article confusing Chipotle with a venture it tested in 2023. The story has since been corrected.”

Chipotle, headquartered in Newport Beach, CA, currently operates over 3,700 restaurants worldwide.

The spokesperson added, “We anticipate opening between 315 to 345 new restaurants this year, with at least 80% including a Chipotlane.” The Chipotlane is a dedicated drive-thru lane at Chipotle restaurants where customers can pick up their food after placing an order through the Chipotle app or website, Forbes noted.

Chipotle Revenue

On Feb. 4, 2025, the company reported its financial results for the fourth quarter and fiscal year ending Dec. 31, 2024. Highlights for 2024 included a 14.6% increase in total revenue to $11.3 billion and a 7.4% increase in comparable restaurant sales.

Chipotle also opened 304 company-owned restaurants, including 257 locations with a Chipotlane and three internationally licensed restaurants.

“Chipotle had another outstanding year, delivering strong transaction-driven comps each quarter, expanding margins, adding over 300 new restaurants, gaining momentum in key industry-leading brand metrics, making progress on many restaurant operating initiatives, and building our footprint internationally,” said CEO Scott Boatwright.

On March 18, 2025, Chipotle announced a conference call for Wednesday, April 23, 2025, to discuss its financial results for the year’s first quarter and give a business update for the second quarter.

“I want to make sure that as we continue to scale Chipotle, everything we do is in service of our guests or those who serve our guests, which will enable us to achieve our long-term ambitious goals of reaching 7,000 restaurants in North America, growing our AUVs beyond $4 million, expanding margins and making progress toward becoming a global iconic brand,” Boatwright added.
