Angel Reese plans to retire her mother.

Reese, born in Randallstown, MD, on May 6, 2002, to Michael Reese and Angel Webb Reese,  has grown into an influential athlete, already making her mark in the WNBA by holding the record for most single-season rebounds — before being surpassed by A’ja Wilson. Reese’s athletic genes come from her parents, both of whom played basketball in college.

Her mother, Angel Webb Reese, played for the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and was inducted into its Athletics Hall of Fame, notes Today. She also had a professional career in Luxembourg. Michael Reese played at Boston College and Loyola University (Maryland) before competing overseas in Luxembourg, Austria, and Portugal, mentions USA Basketball.

“My whole family played basketball. My aunts played basketball, my brother plays basketball, my grandparents played basketball. So, it kind of was like, ‘You’re gonna do this,’” Reese told Just Women’s Sports.

Unsurprisingly, Reese picked up a basketball at the age of 4, drawing inspiration from her mother’s games.

“I used to go to my mom’s games when I was younger. She used to play in a little league, and I used to always go watch her games on Sundays. That was something that was always inspiring to me,” Reese explained to Just Women’s Sports. “She’s always been independent and she molded that into me. I am who I am because of her.”

On Retiring Her Mother

For Reese, basketball has become a stepping stone to honor the role her mother and other family members played in her life. As AFROTECH™ previously mentioned, Reese capitalized on her talents during college through name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals.

She secured deals with major brands, including Wingstop, McDonald’s, Raising Cane’s, Amazon, TurboTax, and Xfinity.

On April 15, 2024, Reese was drafted as the 7th overall pick by the Chicago Sky in the WNBA Draft. She signed a four-year deal worth $324,383, per Sporting News. Additionally, she has a deal with Reebok, with her signature shoe set to launch in 2026, states ESPN.

Through her success, Reese is paying it forward to her loved ones, especially her mother.

“It’s not just a luxury for me. It’s a luxury for everybody around me. I’m able to soon retire my mom. I can pay my mom’s mortgage, and my family — everybody’s taken care of,” Reese told Speedy Morman of “360 With Speedy” during ComplexCon.

As for her finances and conversations regarding Reese’s estimated $2 million net worth, the 22-year-old shared that the numbers are “way off,” per the video.

“Is it inaccurate?” Morman asked Reese at the event. She responded, “Yeah.” However, she didn’t disclose any actual numbers during the conversations but confirmed she is financially stable.
